In a groundbreaking collaboration with the European Space Agency, Datel AS, a leading Estonian IT company, has unveiled its latest service under development – the "Illegal Construction Detector." This web application utilizes satellite data to identify and monitor unauthorized construction activities in sparsely populated areas across Europe, aiming to alleviate the administrative burden on local governments and promote environmental sustainability.

The City of Tallinn successfully used the Sille.Space early warning system developed by Datel to analyze its network of height benchmarks, thereby saving hundreds of thousands of euros.

April 12-13 we presented to municipalities remote monitoring services based on satellite data. The Cities and Municipalities conference was held at the conference center of SOKOS Hotel Viru in Tallinn. The event was organized by the Association of Estonian Cities and Municipalities (AECM).  All 79 municipalities of Estonia are members of the association.

Tallinn city-planning office’s engineering department has successfully used Sille.Space to analyze its network of height benchmarks, identifying 13 out of 116 benchmarks that require re-leveling, and 6 unstable areas. This has enabled the Geodesy and Land Management Unit in Tallinn’s Urban Planning Department to make well-informed decisions about which parts of the height benchmarks need re-leveling, avoiding unnecessary and large-scale engineering tasks and saving hundreds of thousands of euros in costs.

This week, Tõnis Oja, AS Datel Space team InSAR specialist is gaining new knowledge at a remote sensing workshop on the geodetic applications of synthetic aperture radar in Espoo, Finland. The workshop is sponsored by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), the International Associations of Geodesy (IAG), and Seismology and Physics of Earth's Interior (IASPEI) within IUGG.
The week continues with Working group meetings of the Nordic Geodetic Commission (NKG), the Working Group of Geodynamics and Earth Observations (WGGEO), and the Working Group for Height and Geoid (WGHG).

As an independent company, ValueSpace started operations in June 2022. AS Datel is involved in the company as an investor.
ValueSpace uses the same technology as Sille Space. ValueSpace has chosen the UK as its base for global expansion.

An article about the cooperation between AS Datel and P. P. Projekt was published in the Äripäev construction news portal Ehitusuudised.ee.  Knowledge of big data analysis, on the one hand, and technical know-how on the other. 

According to Aimo Kõva, Business Development Manager at Datel, an engineer can go back in time to 2016 based on the data processing of the images collected by the Sentinel-1.  “Collecting a similar amount of data, for example, geodetically, using drones, LIDAR or other similar applications is not rational from the viewpoints of time or cost efficiency,” Kõva explained. 

According to Richard Viies, Head of the Construction Audit Division of P.P. Projekt, the combining of satellite research enables users to obtain preliminary information at a reasonable cost when planning a project by analyzing the surface geometry, and the effect of seasons, surrounding constructions, and demolitions.  Read more (in Estonian)

Last week, Oliver Stimmer from AS Datel participated Estonian space industry delegation study trip to Norway. The purpose of the visit was to hear about the developments in the Norwegian space industry, exchange experience, expertise, and knowledge on the space industry in each country, and boost cooperation.

Datel Space Team is participating at the European Space Agency (ESA) Living Planet Symposium in Bonn next week. It is the world's largest specialist conference in the field of Earth observation.  This year the focus will be on environmental and climate issues. 

Decisions that take us further are knowledge-based, which means that the value of information cannot be underestimated. To date, the Estonian civil engineering sector has developed a hybrid solution linking satellite research with construction engineering knowledge.

P.P. Eesti and AS Datel have recently started to cooperate in order to offer a novel engineering solution based on data from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellite to the Estonian market.

Spatial data services specialist Tõnis Oja from AS Datel Sille.Space team will present on March 15th the results of an InSAR analysis of an old European mining area and a South American dam, comparing these analyzes with measured movements on land.

January 10th we will be attending the "Creating cities of the Future with the Help of Tech-Innovation" seminar at Dubai Expo Estonian Pavilion. The seminar is organized by Tallinn and Tartu, two of the biggest cities in Estonia, both known as digital start-up hubs as well as Estonian green and cultural cities.

This innovative service helps prevent accidents caused by deterioration of infrastructure and, thus, contributes to the public’s general safety.

On 14 September, Datel was honored to participate in the panel discussion of the France-Estonia Business Forum "Smart and Green Mobility: Cities of the Future: Safer, Greener, Smarter?". 

On the part of Datel, Oliver Stimmer, the Head of Space Domain participated in the panel, he explained the ground monitoring options and introduced Sille.Space solution.

We had the opportunity to participate in the Estonian-United Arab Emirates workshop held at the e-Estonian Presentation Center and to introduce the Sille.Space Early Warning System to the representatives of The United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA).

Estonian e-construction 3D twin, developed by AS Datel, includes three-dimensional models of buildings throughout Estonia. The ground elevation model and 3D models of buildings used in 3D twin are created by the Land Board.
This digital tool is especially helpful for the real estate and construction sectors, but can also provide important information to, for example, a private individual purchasing a house.
The new digital tool allows a look at what a building would look like in the existing environment, what restrictions should be considered when designing the building, and how shadows will affect the building. 

The Estonian IT company Datel has conducted a study into technological options for creating a research archive of heliophysics data collected during the Solar Orbiter mission of the European Space Agency (ESA).  Engineers from Estonia assessed 10 database technologies designed for recording time series, four of them in more detail.

According to Evelin Kasenõmm, the Head of Space Domain at Datel, all of the shortlisted technologies were open-source or open-source licensed.

"Hämarik appeared silent before, but we were able to send commands to the satellite with more amplified antennas and Hämarik started communicating. The main radio does not appear to be working, but the backup radio is talking and we have regular communication. The contact with the first satellite Koit is very weak and still early to tell how the satellite is doing or what exactly happened before", said Rauno Gordon, Space center manager at Tallinn University of Technology.

We shared the benefits of the Datelś Early Warning System SILLE at India´s 1st and largest smart exhibition for smart technologies.

More than 10 thousand Smart Technologies Professionals participated in Smartec India virtual expo.

On September 3rd Vega rocket carrying student satellite Hämarik launched from the space center at Kourou in French Guiana. 
For now, we know that the Vega rocket has reached orbit and Hämarik has separated from the rocket. 

The earliest launch opportunity is August, 17th. Hämarik is the second of two student satellites that the TalTech - Tallinn University of Technology, in cooperation with DATEL, will launch into orbit. The Koit (Dawn) satellite launched on July 5 last year with a rocket from Russia.

TalTech Satellites, Koit and Hämarik, are built to monitor the Earth from space, both satellites have two remote-sensing cameras, one for color (RGB) and the other for near-infrared (NIR).
The Vega rocket has over 40 small satellites onboard - most of them cube-satellites like satellites Koit and Hämarik.

Led by Carl Pucci, we formed an international team across Europe for the EUvsVirus hackathon, and developed two products based on InSAR processing.

The European Commission, led by the European Innovation Council and in close collaboration with the EU member states, hosted this pan-European EUvsVirus hackathon to connect civil society, innovators, partners, and investors across Europe in order to develop innovative solutions for coronavirus-related challenges.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred on March 22 in Croatia. The earthquake caused severe damage to more than 7,000 buildings in the center of Zagreb, including the Zagreb Cathedral.
SILLE team performed an analysis of Zagreb, which enables the remote identification of buildings in dangerous condition. Based on this information, engineers who identify the destruction of buildings can address the most serious sources of danger in the first place.

Our engineers are helping to select suitable technologies for storing and archiving data collected by Solar Orbiter. 

Scientific research spacecraft Solar Orbiter has launched on its journey to study the Sun on February 9. The Solar Orbiter will address big questions in Solar System science to help us understand how our star creates and controls the giant bubble of plasma that surrounds the whole Solar System and influences the planets within it. It is an ESA mission with strong NASA participation. 

Agu Leinfeld as an expert in space technology and artificial intelligence to improve user experience participates in UN Science Policy Business Forum on the Environment, November 4 - 9, Canberra, Australia. Participants will come from top Space Agencies and Earth Observation Centres; Frontier Technology giants, start-ups and entrepreneurs; top UN officials, Presidency of the UN Environment Assembly; top decision-makers, scientists and strategists; non-governmental groups, citizen science leaders and financial institutions.

In July 2019, Tartu hosted the world-famous Metallica concert with more than 65,000 visitors. The city decided to seize the opportunity,  collect all kinds of data around this event and organize the  Data Science Seminar. Datel analyzed the Metallica concert through the SAR eye, using the Early Warning system SILLE.

EASME and the European Commission have launched the Eyes on Earth’ Roadshow – a series of five events across the EU bringing space and Earth observation closer to EU citizens; and raising awareness of the skills and job opportunities in the geospatial industry. The 'Eyes on Earth' Roadshow lets you explore how satellite information can help improve operational applications such as climate & weather, mobility & transport planning, renewables, air quality, fresh water availability and distribution, smart farming, financial risk management and critical infrastructure.

Estonian companies Enefit, Nortal, Datel and Smagrinet will present innovative digital solutions at the World Energy Congress in Abu Dhabi on 9-12 September; the Estonian president, Kersti Kaljulaid, will also attend.
With over 150 countries represented, the World Energy Congress is the world’s largest and most influential energy event, covering all aspects of the energy agenda. Kaljulaid will be the keynote speaker at the congress on 10 September and will also participate in a panel discussion, “Getting to grips with the blockchain: Cutting through the hype”.

This is the most important energy event in the world with more than 150 countries participating. There are traditionally many state leaders, including this year the President of the Republic of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid.

At the event, Asse Hang will present SILLE as an e-service focused on using satellite data to monitor critical energy sector infrastructure including pipelines, mines, dams and power plants.

Datel is providing InSAR data processing together with the ESA to support FEMA and US Army Corps of Engineers preparedness as Hurricane Dorian approaches the United States. Together with our American partners, we are remotely inspecting levee sections, urban areas and sea walls across Florida; and we stand by to do so in other states as the storm's track becomes clearer.

5th July Soyuz-2.1b rocket carrying student satellite Koit launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome. TalTech student satellite project is being implemented by TalTech and DATEL together. Hämarik, our second student satellite, will launch on September 9.

ITS Estonia delegation with Asse Hang from Datel introduced smart city solutions in the ITS Congress in Europe. ITS Congress in Europe is the largest event entirely dedicated to smart mobility and digitalization of transport is organized by ERTICO – ITS Europe. ITS Estonia was cooperating with Finnish colleagues from ITS Finland, to introduce solutions and products for organizations from the public and private sector.

Initially the students from the university planned to launch one satellite into orbit, but a prime opportunity recently arose for them to launch two. Datel is supporting TalTech’s Mektory Space Centre with calculation and presentation equipment and both satellites with software.

Driven by demanding environmental regulation, increased operating costs and a lack of skilled labour the European mining community are turning to digital technologies to boost productivity. The conference shared best practice and innovations from leading mines across Europe.

The data center named ESTHub helps technology companies obtain and process more quickly remote sensing data obtained from space. AS Datel uses remote sensing data collected by the Sentinel-1 satellite and disseminated via ESTHub, among others, in the new service Sille.  Via ESTHub we can get data about Estonia and the nearby region especially fast, which enables us to offer a service of particularly high quality. 

Sille gives you the power to see structural and surface deformation of any site on the planet, since 2014, from your browser. "The service, based on satellite data, helps prevent accidents caused by the disintegration of infrastructure, and its uses are very wide," explained ITL President Ivo Suursoo.

Datel presented SILLE at the conference and industrial exhibition “Innovative Energy Solutions for Military Applications” (IESMA 2018) on 14-16th  November. The event is carried out by the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence and will provide information on innovative solutions that will help improve the operational capability of military.

Pg. 11, The IT company Datel has been developing a new e-service, SILLE, for several years and the Road Administration has helped to test its various value chains from the beginning. The company has already been successful in foreign markets and is cooperating with, among others, the State of Maryland in the United States and Scandinavian customers. 

August 8, Carl Pucci presented SILLE at the 2018 Annual Technical Forum for Geohazards Impacting Transportation.

The event was hosted by Maryland Department of Transportation and sponsored by the Marshall University Center for Environmental, Geotechnical and Applied Sciences (CEGAS).

Estonian company Datel has launched a service that allows users to remotely monitor changes in the settling of infrastructures around the world, thus helping to avoid disasters.

At the 2018 World Nuclear Exhibition, Datel and Tecnatom were the first to present satellite radar based acquisition, analysis, and action (A3) to monitor nuclear facilities globally. As part of the increasing focus on long-term maintenance and efficiency of legacy plants, as well as site selection and expansion of the A3 platform forms part of nuclear operators strategy considerations. We are excited to bring Sille to bear in a banner field for advancement. We are proud to have been invited to present this solution under the flag of Spain at the Spanish nuclear power pavilion.
